Hi everyone I’m Renee and welcome to my blog today’s topic is gonna play out a little bit differently than my other topics I am making my son’s birthday cake. he’s turning nine and he’s super into fortnight so he wanted a Fortnite cake he settled on the fortnight battle bus I only have a day maybe a day and a half to make this so I have already pre-baked Fortnite cake topers layers.
I’m using a 9 by 13 cake actually baked too because I’m gonna have vanilla and chocolate cake but I really think you only need one 9 by 13 layer for this. so I’m gonna gather some things and then we’ll get started for my cake board I’m using a 1/2 inch piece of foam core that I got from the craft store. I measured and cut it to about 4 and a half by 13 inches and notched out space for the wheels this way it’s about half the width of my cake sheet. I’m gonna use it as a guide to mark halfway and then cut my layer so if you’re using just one flavor you only need one layer of Fortnite cake.
This other half of each flavor is gonna be extra if you’re interested in either my vanilla or chocolate cake recipes. I’ll have those linked below so I just leveled off the top of the cake and then I’m gonna split the layer in half so this is sorting the cake. and I can alternate my cake flavors and I did the same thing with my chocolate layer of cake level it off and split the layer so that when I assemble the cake I can alternate those flavors next I assembled the cake. I am using a white chocolate ganache that I whipped up and a raspberry buttercream as my filling layers and I have my board ready to go I’m gonna stick down the bottom layer of Fortnite cake. and then go about assembling alternating fillings and cake flavors then I crumb coated the entire cake with some buttercream and I’m gonna pop this in the refrigerator to chill so it’s nice and firm and easy to carve with my Fortnite cake.
chilled it’s firm it’s gonna be really easy to carve.
So I’m gonna start by trimming the sides so I have a little bit of space between the side of the cake and the Fortnite cake board that’s gonna be my guide when I’m icing this how to make the whipped cream. later on, with some chocolate ganache then using a picture of reference, I’m going to begin carving the bus so it’s a pretty easy shape to make so I’m cutting out this big chunk by the front to make the front hood of the bus and already it starts to take shape. I’m going to continue to reference my picture and cut some curves into the sides near this front so it looks like the front hood and leaves a little space for the wheel well.
I decided the cake was a little too tall and looking a little bit too much like a box truck. so I trimmed down the top of Fortnite cake to make it just a little bit shorter. and then I’m gonna trim down the hood as well then I rounded the top edges.
So I would have more of that classic school bus shape once the shape is all carved I’m gonna pop this back in the refrigerator just for a few more minutes so it can stay chilled well I grabbed my ganache and then I’m gonna ice the outside of the fortnite cake with some yummy chocolate ganache I usually use buttercream for the outside of my cake but I chose ganache for this application because it’s gonna set nice and firm at room temperature and be much easier while I’m working on the details of the simple fortnite cake.
once the cakes fully coated I’m gonna give it a general smoothing before I set this in the refrigerator just to set up really quickly. and then I’m gonna come back and give it a final smoothing so that I have a nice smooth surface when I cover it with fondant using this flexible scraper that I made out of a flexible cutting mat makes it really easy to get in and smooth the curves on the front of the bus once it’s all smooth I can set this aside until.
I’m ready to cover it with fondant another key piece of the battle bus is the hot air balloon that needs a little bit of prep work I’m using this styrofoam eggs. that I got at the craft store it was the last one of the sides and it’s kind of banged up so I’m going to repair it by smoothing it over entirely with some royal icing now this is also not a smooth foam it’s that rough kind of crumbly foam so covering what the royal icing is gonna also encase those little bits of foam so they don’t contaminate my Fortnite cake decorations.
Fortnite cake IDEAS
once I covered it with the royal icing I smooth my foam egg and I’m going to set this aside to dry once that royal icing is dry to the touch. we can cover it with fondant I’m covering it with white fondant to give it a nice clean base and I’m gonna roll this out pretty thick because I’m covering it down over somewhat of a sphere shape this oval and I’m gonna need a lot of that extra fondant to stretch down.
I brush the surface with some piping gel that I thinned down with water and this is gonna help the fondant stick. then I’m gonna carefully stretch and smooth the fondant down over the surface it can get really tricky down near the base so wherever I really can’t get a pleat smooth out I’m gonna pinch it together really tight. then I can trim it with a knife and smooth the seam once I’m satisfied with the way it looks I’m gonna set the balloon aside so this fondant can set up nice and hard.
So we can continue with decorating it now to create a work surface for me to work on my Fortnite cake I taped down a piece of craft foam that I covered with plastic wrap onto a board because I want this Fortnite cake
to look raised so I need space to be able to work with the wheels underneath and I also had to make this little piece of foam. that I can glue under so it looks like the door of the bus because the school bus is kind of stepped down and the door should be lowered down near the wheels so using a little bit of non-slip mat I put my cake on top of it. and now I have a nice sturdy work platform for my fortnite cake.
Create the little overhang on the front top of the bus. I’m just rolling out a thin log of some blue fondant it could be any color it’s going to be covered up and then I’m gonna flatten it out and use a knife to kind of straighten the edges then using a little bit of water.
I’ll attach it at the top edge then using a little bit of hot glue I’m attaching that little piece of foam that I cut on the passenger side right behind the front wheel I rolled up the blue fondant that I covered with a mixture of Navy and royal blue Baia Mare color gel and again I’m leaving on the thick side so that I have plenty of fondants to work with a brush the surface of the ganache with some of that thinned piping gel so it’s nice and sticky and then cover the whole fortnite cake with fondant and once it’s covered buff the surface nice and smooth with my fondant smothers.
I use the end of a small rolling pin to smooth the fondant into the wheel well since my smoothers don’t fit into the front details of this bus. I’m using just a little ball of fondant and it contours really nicely to smooth out those spaces next it’s time to work on the details of the bus. so I’m lightly marking about halfway up and I’m using a rubber sculpting tool but you can use a toothpick or the end of a paintbrush I cut out a black rectangle for the bus doors and I did kind of emboss it down the middle and not sure.
If you can see that then I have some smaller black squares. that I cut out and I’m using that center line that I scored as a guide to attach these all the way down the bus I used my photo as reference for the sizing of the windows.but then had to kind of downsize them so that they would fit on the dimensions of my fortnite cake.
The driver side window is a little bit of a longer rectangle but then I’m attaching windows.all the way down this side of the bus as well and I do have a centerline that I marked I cut some long thin strips of the black fondant and I’m attaching these as stripes on either side of the Fortnite cake.
And the side of my spatula helps me push that strip into place and straighten everything up I tapered the sides of a rectangle of black fondant and attached that to the front as the hood of our battle bus and rounded the corners of another rectangle to make the windshield. a strip of black fondant goes over that overhang and another over the back of the bus as well I rounded the corners of a larger rectangle for the back windshield I cut some really small rectangles of black fondant and formed them to a curve and I’m going to attach these to the front and back of the bus as little covers that go over the lights. I attached black strips of fondant as back and front bumpers and the reference photo I have the battle bus is looking pretty beat-up and this Fortnite cake is looking pretty clean.
So to roughen it up a little bit I have some petal dust I have a chocolate brown and a black so I can create. some dirty roughed up rusty spots all around the Fortnite cake
and that little detail makes this bus look a little bit rougher and worn to prepare my finish cake board. I want this bus to be raised so I have more of that craft foam that’s one inch thick just like the platform that I created to work with the bus I hot-glued it down to a larger foam core board and impressing some fondant into the crevices.
Fortnite cake IDEAS
So it will have more of a rounded slope up and not a drastic 90-degree angle after rubbing everything with shortening. I’m covering the entire board with some green fondant that I rolled out and I have marbled this with some lime green and darker green along with this medium green. so it has a little bit more variation in interest and kind of mimics some typography that might be down below if this bus was flying overhead I cut the fondant off the top of the foam.
I want the Fortnite birthday cake to have a really good grip on the board and because I had such a rush to the time frame I didn’t have time to let the fondant set up on the board so instead, I cut that fun it off in with some hot glue. I’m going to attach the bottom of the board on the cake right to that foam and it should grip really well I rolled out some black fondant fairly thick probably about a half-inch thick and I’m going to cut some circles and these will be the wheels.
I use a smaller circle to emboss and impression right on top of the wheel just to give some detail it’ll look kind of like the hubcap then I attached smaller yellow circles right in the center because the wheels on the battle bus have wheel clamps. or boots on them then I used water and a toothpick to attach the wheels so I could be certain they’d be really well attached to the Fortnite cake.
The top of the battle bus has a lot of detail and I’m gonna do my best to explain what I’m doing but I’m using a picture for reference so it has this metal brace that holds the hot-air balloon onto the bus. so I’m starting with some grey fondant and I cut some strips rounded the ends and I’m using a pastry tube to make different size circles at either end then with the tip of my knife I’m embossing kind of a channel down one side and then I’m gonna score some marks and this is going to resemble part of what this brace looks like down near the wheels.
This is delicious birthday cake Fortnite.I made four that are this shorter size and four that are a longer size I did use a ruler and measured according to my reference image. so I’d have an idea of how long these trips had to be for the longer pieces I only needed to round one end because the other side will be flush up against a strip that goes down the top of the bus.
I cut that larger rectangle out of the grey fondant it’s about one-third the width across the top of the bus and I left enough space for about one inch on either side I’ve scored an inner rectangle and some other marks.
just so it looks more mechanical the longer strips come down from that centerpiece I’m going to trim any overhang you want it to come down about halfway like right under the windows and then the smaller pieces connect from there down to the yellow wheel lock because the measurements might not be exact I use a toothpick to mark where I need that long strip to come down to and that’s going to help me with my placement and I’ll do this to attach all of the pieces.
I made for each wheel I attacked a small flattened ball of the yellow fondant right in that circle attached to the wheel. and made a hole with a toothpick and this will help it look like the wheel lock is holding that brace onto the top of the bus switching back to the detail on top of the bus. I need to make the little basket that holds the flame.
So I made a cube and then I tapered the sides so that it looks a lot more like the shape. and then I have this round cylinder that goes on top of that it kind of looks like a perfume bottle and the sides of this piece are marked with a little circle that has a V in it.
So I have a round circle of white fondant and I’m embossing an inner circle using a pastry tip and then I’m going to lightly emboss a V on each of these pieces. and they get attached on either side of the larger black piece now to make the blue flame I have a ball of white fondant that I marbled with some sky blue and darker blue and I rolled it kind of into an oblong shape. a log that’s tapered at one end and I’m gonna roll it thin on one side .so I have kind of a long teardrop shape.
I cut a couple of little slits on either side of that top point so it has a flame shape and that’s going to sit right on top of that cylinder on the top center of the bus is a little bit of water as well as a toothpick down the center to secure these pieces the fun and on my balloon has set.
But I’m using a foam pad as a work surface just so I don’t damage anything I cut the bottom portion flat that removes a lot of the messy fondant ends. but also makes it look like there might be an opening for a hot-air balloon I’m gonna attach this hot air balloon with some long thin skewers so that they will kind of look like cables holding it. on but I want to make the holes in this foam first so it’ll be really easy to attach this to the Fortnite cake once you’ve made the holes you know your placements gonna be good so you can remove those skewers.and I’m gonna put it back on to this little setup I have for working on the balloon then using some water.
I’m gonna attach some light teal fondant over the top of the balloon it only goes down about a quarter of the way so just smooth it on and then cut out some curved marks with a knife. so that you have four points and it’s curved in between then I attached about a one and a quarter inch. band of that light teal fondant all the way around the bottom of the balloon leaving just a little bit of space between the very bottom.
Then I trim the edges to make sure they are nice and straight. I inserted the skewers into the Fortnite birthday cake around that Center flame and then it was really easy to attach the balloon. using the holes we already made now I have a thin rope of the light teal fondant and when to attach that underneath the balloon inside of the skewers.and this is gonna hide the messy edge and look like the bottom of a balloon and I’m trying to keep all of my seams and generally the same spot.
So I have kind of a back of the cake although it is going to be decorated all the way around then I painted the skewers with some gunmetal colored food.coloring this is my ameri color gel but if you don’t have that you can use any gray and it’s gonna look like cables holding the balloon down to the bus now for more detailed pieces. down around the flame, I don’t really know what these are called but I made little logs of the gray fondant and I’m splitting those using my knife.
Then I’m going to use a little bit of water down inside that seam. and we’re going to use that opening to press these around the base of the skewers and this is gonna help start the building of this little box frame that goes around and I attached a small darker gray ring around the top of each of these pieces now completing the sides of this box around that flame I use little gray logs of the gray fondant and I wrap them with strips of red fondant. and each side needs two of this one for the top and one for the bottom for the pieces that are going around the top they won’t be resting right on the cake.
So I inserted little 20 gauge wires so that they have some stability. now if I was making these pieces ahead of time I would just make them and let them dry so that they would be solid on the ends I put little balls of the darker gray fondant. and then used water to attach these between the skewers around the top and then I did the same for around the bottom.
But I lost the clip of that to make the brackets that look like they’re holding those cables onto the balloon I have little logs again of the light grape. on it and I split about halfway up and then use my fingers to flatten one end I used a little bit of water on the back and then attach this right at the top of the skewer. the flat part goes against the balloon and then I wrapped the other pieces around the skewer and then made a hole.
So they look like a little rivet the balloon has additional cables. that run from that sheet looking piece down to the bus so I made brackets by making little upside-down bowling pin shapes with the light gray fondant I have a wire that I curved that will insert right into there and then a little ball of the light gray fondant that’s going to attach to the bus and do this for each of the points on that light teal fondant that we attach to the top of the bloom and I painted these wires with the gunmetal food coloring as well.
I attached a light-gray grill to the front of the bus then a block of black fondant goes in the center of that and this little cylinder and I marked it with a toothpick so it looks like it has little holes I believe it’s a colander but that goes right on the front of that black block I have no idea what to call this next piece but it looks like a little gray and black snail so I made a block of light gray fondant and cut strips of the light gray fondant. and the black fondant to put the pieces where they look like they were in the picture this little snail perhaps it’s supposed to be a generator gets attached to the top of the bus. with the little antenna facing the flame now, I have a wire that I’m bending into a curve to contour the top of the bus. and I rolled a thick log of yellow fondant.
I’m scoring marks in it with a toothpick just by rolling it and this makes it look like it’s kind of corrugated then I flipped it over and scored the other way and thread this right on to the curved wire one end of this wire. gets inserted into that black block on the front of the bus and the other end goes into the snail generator and this is that yellow hose that’s in front of the battle bus I have little circles a black fondant.
That I inserted onto toothpicks to make the front mirrors on the bus and those toothpicks get painted gunmetal gray as well I finish up the wheels by finishing the braces for the wheel locks. I cut a strip of yellow fondant and inserted a wire I hooked one end so I knew where it would hook into that hole I made then measuring against the fortnite cake.
I know where I need to make a 90-degree angle trim off the extra yellow and bend the wire. back up so you have an L of yellow and then the other wire bends back up under the wheel it won’t be seen but it’s gonna hold this bracket in place and you’ll do this for all four wheels just a couple of small details left I made a rocket for the top of the bus by making a cone out of the light gray fondant and three very tiny triangles.
On the skinny end and a small circle black right on front of the thicker end I painted a toothpick gray and use this to attach the rocket right into that black block underneath the flame and on the opposite side.
I made a satellite receiver I bent a toothpick and put a disk of ivory colored fondant I painted it gunmetal gray and inserted that right into the black block as well and then finished off the tip with a little ball of light gray fondant a lot of pieces of this brace glow a neon blue so I took white food coloring and mixed in a little bit of sky-blue to make kind of a neon blue. and I painted in all the little ridges and circles that I embossed all over the cake and finally I painted lines on the windows at different levels so it would look like some of the windows were open and some were closed and at different points all along the bus just to give a little bit more detail and the cake is done I really love how this cake turned out my son loved his birthday fortnite cake and so did the other kids at the party.
